Article: I’d be honored to have my kid throw down for Coach Robichaux.

Ragin' Cajuns head baseball coach Tony Robichaux spoke at length during a news conference Monday about the lack of toughness in kids who come from select baseball, and it seems to have struck a nerve with people. It certainly did with me. He related a story about his grandson getting a ring from a United States Specialty Sports Association baseball tournament that was bigger than a Major League Baseball World Series ring.
Kids win, they get a giant ring, Robichaux said. And when they lose, they're still rewarded with pizza parties and trips to the zoo and theme parks. That's not how real life works. "We're not teaching them anything," Robichaux said. "Life's not that way...We shouldn't be fooling kids into a false model." When the Cajuns drop a game, he said, "they're waiting for me to take them to Water World. "Dude, we ain't going to Water World." Robichaux has long been known for valuing toughness among his players. He praises those who have "throwdown," who play with passion and leave it all on the field. He has earned a reputation for turning boys in grinders. Toughness, Robichaux said, can compensate for shortcomings in talent. "If you can get your kids tough, then you have an advantage," he said.
I believe in toughness. It has served me well in athletic endeavors and in life. It's something I want to pass on to my son. At 11, he's athletic, but he wasn't born with an abundance of raw talent. He is overflowing with passion, however. And I have seen him throw down. It hasn't always resulted in a win, and that's OK. Sure, he likes the idea of fancy equipment and rings and trophies. But at the end of the day, there are more important rewards: Love of the game, the satisfaction of knowing you gave it your all, the shared experience and being there for your teammates. There are always going to be things in a game that you can't control — bad officiating, injuries, weather. So focus on what you can control — leave it all on the court or the field, every time. Use every loss to make you tougher. Same thing goes for life. "I don't care what mental weakness a kid has, what lack of ability he has, if he's been taught how to throw down ... he's gonna make it," Robichaux said. I don't know whether my son will continue to play, whether he'll play in high school or college. But I'd want him to play for someone like Robichaux. Because life is tough. It's not fair. And no trips to Water World are going to change that. You might as well give it all you've got, live and play with passion, and when the rubber meets the road ... throw down!
HBA is proud to announce that Adam Taylor has joined its coaching staff.
Adam has a passion for helping others and the game of baseball. Adam, grew up in San Diego splitting years of time between the Lemon Grove and Ramona areas. Lemon Grove was his starting point and he moved to Ramona when he was around 8 years old where he lived until age 17. he then moved back to Lemon Grove and finished his high school education and baseball seasons at The Rock Academy. His family has helped him in all aspects of his life. His passion for baseball soaked up all of his youth.
After high school, he went on to study Business Administration and play baseball at Concordia University, a small NCAA Div. II school in Portland, Oregon. Adam was able to choose a school where he could get substantial playing time all 4 years and develop further as a man and a baseball player. Many of these experiences helped Adam gain further and more advanced insight on the game of baseball and more simple ways to think about playing the game.
