Saturday, 8/4/2018, 3 pm -  Former MLB Kris Benson and MLB Justin Snyder will be at Presidio to teach the kids a few things
  • Kris Benson
After moving from upstate Wisconsin when he was six, Kris started playing baseball at seven years old in the country town of Milledgeville, GA. He played baseball, basketball, and football until high school, focusing on just baseball after his Sophomore year. During the summer between his Junior and Senior year, Kris went 19-1 for the national powerhouse East Cobb Yankees. He also played on a handful of National All-Star teams featuring many future Major League players. Before leaving high school, Kris was voted the Gatorade State Player of the Year and won many other state and local awards.

At Clemson University, Kris’s teams won an ACC Conference Championship and went to the College World Series twice. Personally, Kris excelled all three years but especially his Junior year, sweeping all major Player of the Year awards, including the ACC Male Athlete of the Year, which had only been awarded to one other baseball player in the history of the award, as well as the Dick Howser Trophy for his performance, character, leadership, and courage - baseball’s equivalent to football’s Heisman Trophy. Soon after leaving Clemson, Kris donned the red, white, and blue and represented Team USA in the 1996 Olympic Games in his hometown of Atlanta, winning the bronze medal - the last year for amateur players.

Kris was selected the number one overall draft pick that same year by the Pittsburgh Pirates. After two years in the Minor Leagues, he made his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs on April 4, 1999 - Sammy Sosa becoming his first Big League strikeout. After coming in forth that year for the Rookie of the Year, Kris went on to spend 13 years in professional baseball - ten and a half of those in the Major Leagues. He played in the Majors for the Pirates, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and retiring due to a shoulder injury after the 2010 season with the Arizona Diamondback.
